This place is ridiculous. It is more like a voluntary halfway house/homeless shelter/party house. 9/10 Women in there are not there due to abuse and even have boyfriends/husbands "on the outside". They bring drugs and alcohol in everyday, despite weekly "mandatory" meetings where everyone is routinely told the same things. The staff rarely leaves the office, so they have no idea what is really going on and when someone gives them a heads-up, it is ignored until the situation becomes out of control or even results in the near death of a child. You are not free from abuse there. If you did not go there due to abuse, you will definitely get your share of it during your stay. Maybe not physical (though it happens), but definitely verbal, emotional, and even financial. The staff (most) offers little help aside from a dirty room and food if your lucky enough to get our hands on it before it gets hoarded. They will call DCF on petty, insignificant things while the alcoholic, drug abusing mothers are allowed to run the show and let their children wreak havoc. All it takes is a few lies and some tears. The staff claim that they are the best shelter because there are no rules. I think any logical human can agree that at least SOME rules are essential. Without rules there is chaos, especially when dealing with drug addicts and people with mental incapacitates. It is filthy, because no one is required to clean up. Don't count on getting much sleep either, there is no curfew. Most do not work, there is no help to get a job either. And if you do get a job you better have your own car or you will probably lose your job soon enough when they are understaffed or their vehicles are "broken" and cant take you. There is basically no help to get into permanent housing. I truly don't know what everyone does after leaving that place. Shelter hop I guess. The truth is, this place in not helping a whole hell of a lot. It is meant to be a place for broken women and children whom have been through something. Everyone should come together an empower each other.. instead it is a place where anyone can come squat and have a good time, reaping some benefits while there. The staff needs to offer more encouragement and lay down some rules. There also needs to be thicker guidelines for who they allow in. The BGH could be such a nice place for women to start fresh. Sadly it is more like a bad reality show. If you do find yourself in a bad situation and need to go there, by all means go, pray, stay to yourself, keep your children close, and work hard to get up out of that hell hole.
